Laurence de Valmy combines painting and digital mediums, to bring a new light on our collective imagery and make the viewers ponder on our society including the notion of fame, the place of women or the role of social media.
In her POST paintings, she combines iconic artworks skillfully appropriated with imagined conversations on Instagram, historically accurate yet humorous. The TikTok Timeless are short videos, available as NFTs, sharing a moment in time in the life of these artists. By telling the stories behind these artworks, the artist leads us to consider them with a new eye and ponder on the central place of social media for artists.
In the series You Go Girl, de Valmy paints the positive portrayal of girls in modern-day comic books like Pokemon, to highlight and amplify an empowering narrative.
Laurence de Valmy is French American and lives in San Diego, USA. Her work is represented by galleries based in New York, UK and France. She is an active member of Artcan.org, a non profit artist community.
In 2017, she was awarded an Artist Residency by the ESKFF at Mana Contemporary, NJ (USA) to work on the POST series.
In 2018, de Valmy’s work was displayed at the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA) in Munich in the exhibition The BUNTE Art, alongside Andy Warhol and at the Barnes Foundation in the group show Let’s Connect.
In 2019 Michele Mariaud Gallery, NYC presented her solo show with and she was the guest artist of Museum Week in NYC. In December 2019, she presented the installation Embrace during the Miami art week at SCOPE Miami Beach.
In June 2020, her work was part of the exhibition CONCEPT at the CICA Museum (Korea) and her artwork now belongs to their permanent collection. Her work appeared on the HBO series The Undoing starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant through her collaboration with Michele Mariaud Gallery.
In 2021, she was among the 20 influential women artists selected by Singulart and was invited by Summit Public Art to create an art installation displayed in Summit (NJ, USA). She was part of the jury of Art Students Week.
Her interest for women’s place in society in general and the arts in particular, led her to create the series HER and HIStory, to collaborate with Art Girl Rising in 2020 and 2022 and to create the NFTs Most Famous Visual Artists presented during the launch of the Santa Monica Art Museum. Her work is included in the 2023/24 exhibition at the MUD Foundation in Miami.
Her paintings belong to private collections including CICA Museum (Seoul), Hubert Burda Collection (Munich), Musée du Sourire (Paris), Eileen Kaminsky Foundation (NJ).
Her artwork has been featured in publications such as Forbes, The Art Gorgeous, Create Magazine, Wall Street International, Blanc Magazine, Un1k and France Amérique among others and by the French Embassy in the USA.
She is an ArtCan member, a non profit community of artists and regularly supports charities through her artwork. She shares about art through her writings on her blog as well as art publications.
Statement
Art is a continuum and a mirror of our society.
Through art appropriation, I bring my own view to existing artworks, pay a tribute to their authors, and play with the concept of originality.
I aim to shed new light on our collective imagery and to prompt viewers to ponder on our current society, including the place of women or the influence of the media.
